Different climates and soil compositions produce different characteristics in Peppermint. The Pacific Northwest of North America has ideal growing conditions for Peppermint due to consistent and ample annual rainfall. This provides for high menthol content, which provides Peppermint’s minty aroma and flavour.
How It Works
A hybrid of watermint and spearmint, Peppermint is a perennial herb. The essential oil is extracted from the aerial parts of the plant. When Peppermint is ready to be harvested, it is cut at the base of the plant and left to dry in the field for a few days. Before distillation, it is chopped finely. It takes about one pound of Peppermint leaves to produce a 15 mL essential oil bottle. Throughout the autumn, the by-product of the distillation is repurposed as mulch.
