The bitter orange tree is originally native to East Asia. However, it has been growing in Egypt since Arabs introduced it in 642 BC. Although many orange trees worldwide have since been modified through cross-breeding, the Egyptian variety has remained almost entirely untouched to this day.

How it works

The bitter orange tree is a hardy, evergreen tree species. At least three types of essential oils are typically extracted from it: bitter orange essential oil from the fruit's peel, petitgrain oil from the leaves and young twigs, and neroli from the flowers. The flowers needed for neroli are carefully hand-picked from the trees. After harvesting, the flowers must be steam-distilled as quickly as possible to obtain the highest quality and yield of essential oil.
